Plywerk started in our basement. Kim, a photographer, needing to mount a photo, took some wood glue to the photo and applied it to a piece of plywood. Kjell, a serial entrepreneur and graphic designer, saw an opportunity. A product was created and a business was born.

For the next two years we sold Kim’s photos on gorgeous maple plywood at local craft-markets. There we met like-minded artists, fellow entrepreneurs, loyal customers, and a wizard named Paul.
In 2012, we moved our growing team out of our house, into a new workshop and began to expand the product line to offer more ways for you to display your photos, products and memories. We continue to handcraft these and new products with an ethos that is more than just green.
When Kjell and Kim considered closing the doors of Plywerk in 2016, they were contacted by Derric Swinfard. Derric was once one of Plywerk’s biggest competitors with his own equally sustainable business, Prints On Wood, specializing in creating unique limited edition artistic woodprints. When he caught wind of Kjell and Kim’s approaching decision, he reached out to them expressing a great deal of respect for their business and products over the years. Interested in continuing the legacy and discipline Plywerk had worked so hard to reinforce over the years with their customer base, Derric was able to work with Kjell and Kim, begining a new chapter for Plywerk, allowing them to pass the torch and breathe new life into the business.
Moving Plywerk’s base of operations to California alongside Prints On Wood, Derric and Kjell created new leaner production methods, while carrying over tried and true practices that earned the respect of clients to preserve the same level of integrity Plywerk had enjoyed in Portland OR, now at it’s new home in Riverside, CA.
Sustainably Made in California
The vast majority of today's economy revolves around cheap overseas manufacturing. As a consequence, the local economy in which we all thrive is often forgotten. We pride ourselves on bucking this trend.
By harnessing the power of the sun, every piece of Plywerk is sustainably produced in Southern California using 100% solar energy, using sustainably sourced materials from local suppliers whenever possible. This allows us to create every single Plywerk using a method that is more than just green.
