Give us a brief description of you and your artwork.
I’m a husband, dad, business owner, designer, animator and long-time skateboarder just trying to push myself to keep learning in all areas of life. As far as my artwork, I try to put a lot of thought into the details of each piece. I try to find “smart” solutions for each project so that 5 years from now I can look back and the piece still makes sense and holds up over time. That’s been a goal of mine anyway. Not sure it’s always accomplished but it’s at least in consideration during the process.
You’re a motion designer and digital artists, explain how working in those two arenas influences your artwork?
I have a background in print design (about 14 years or so). And about 6 years ago I began learning motion work in After Effects and quickly moved onto Cinema 4D. For me, Illustration is a training ground and experimental medium for new concepts that I may not know how to animate. The print medium frees me up to create and not be too concerned with figuring out how I will animate it. That removes a lot of the intimidation of learning new programs like C4D and has given me an incredible opportunity to bring my ideas to life.
What’s your goal as an artist?
I’m definitely a “commercial artist” in the sense that I have goals for the types of clients I’d like to work with but can’t say I have well-defined goals for where I want to take my style. I want to keep learning and not get stuck in a rut. I think it’s really hard not to get stuck doing the same thing or same style over and over – especially if you are really good at it and people will pay a premium for it. But ultimately, I get pretty bored with my own work and enjoy a variety of mediums and styles. So one of my goals is to keep experimenting, learning, and pushing myself.
Why do you chose to show your artwork on Plywerk?
Plywerk prints are swaaaaged out. Mounting on Bamboo is so legit. It’s really important that the print quality represents the quality of your digital artwork. Plywerk’s prints display my work in a way that feels incredibly “tactile” and not digital. I’ve tried other methods and never felt that it represented my work in a way that made me proud. The Inkjet Exhibition printed on Matte canvas is my preferred method from Plywerk. Looks like an oil painting of my digital artwork. It’s unreal.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
In general, faith, music, fashion and skateboarding have really shaped my thinking and the way I go about creating new work. I think you can learn a lot from studying the work of others and looking for ways to improve your techniques by spending time online looking at sites like Behance; but I also think inspiration and some really unique ideas are going to come from looking outside the monitor. We recently did a night time shoot with some wake skaters and all sorts of ideas for the graphics popped up from being on that video shoot. Things that never would have made sense if I had stayed behind the monitor looking for ideas.
What kinds of clients do you like working with the most?
This has been an incredible year working with Nike, Malibu Boats, Rob Dyrdek and the crew over at Street League Skateboarding – among other great clients. My studio, ABC (Already Been Chewed, LLC) has had some great success connecting large brands to core markets and hope to continue to expand on that idea. I really enjoy creating “pop culture” campaigns through branded artwork and motion design. I also think it’s important to use your talents for good and so I look for opportunities to work with non-profits and raise funds and awareness for their causes. Last year I was able to work with Sevenly.org and Malaria No More to create an illustration that raised over 7 grand for fighting Malaria in Africa. That piece also won the Veer Creative Catalyst Award and was put on display in London at Onedotzero and in Berlin. (Veer.com donated $2,500 to Malaria No More as part of that award.)

Who did you have a bigger crush on while growing up: Winnie Cooper from the Wonder Years or Andy Carmichael from The Goonies?

Favorite living artist?
Shepard Fairey is such an inspiration in all that he’s accomplished with OBEY. It’s rare for an artist to be a household name.
Favorite deceased artist?
Does thinking of Plywerk give you love butterflies in your stomach?
Only at night time.
