Q&A
Give us a brief description of you and your work.
I am a comercial food and still life photographer with a background in graphic design and fine art. I am originally from Germany and have joyously adopted New York City as my second home. When I am not behind the camera, I am working with pastry chef Albane Sharrard on our food blog Whip+Click!
What drew you to photographing food and restaurants
My good friend Albane is a pastry chef and about 3 years ago she asked me if I could photograph her latest creations. I instantly fell in love with food photography.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
Pinterest, magazines, books, museums and galleries…and walking around in New York City!
What’s your goal as an artist?
My goal is to make every food look irresistibly delicious!
Do you style the food in your photographs yourself or do you work with a stylist? Any tips for the rest of us?
It depends on the job. For an editorial job I usually have a food stylist. Restaurants prefer to have their chefs style the food. There is a great website about learning food photography and styling: learnfoodphotography.com. You have to listen to the wonderful interviews with foody stylists and food photographers.
What do you enjoy shooting the most / is there a favorite food that you love shooting? Why?
Desserts of course
Which of your images do you like the most and why?
My favorite image is of a painted egg surrounded by nuts in a metal bowl. To me if feels like home.
Why do you chose to show your artwork on Plywerk?
Most of my images are about food and I love how the Plywerks remind me of cutting boards. I often give a plywerk as a gifts to my clients and they love them!
How do you like your eggs prepared?
Soft boiled with a little salt
Favorite coffee drink?
Ice coffee with lots of milk all year round
Favorite living artist?
Hiroshi Sugimoto
Favorite hair style?
Just like Winona Ryder in Reality Bites
Breakfast cereal of choice?
Oatmeal with fruit

I was very pleased to come across this. I’m a fan of Evi Abeler photography. She covered restaurant month a few years ago and the photographs of the various restaurants/food were spectacular.
