Vinny’s crowdfunding campaign is now underway, and we figured you might have some questions about him. Firstly, let’s cover the basics: what is Vinny? Vinny is all about putting your vinyl album art on display, and is available as a frame, stand, or crate (the video on the crowdfunding page shows a few of the ways to use him). What about why we made him? Because we’re all music lovers, and we’re all a little bit old school. But we’re also new school, which is how we can answer this question: why did we choose to construct Vinny out of juniper instead of our bamboo or maple mainstays? There are several reasons for this. One, restoration juniper is a locally-grown resource here in Oregon. Two, it happens to be incredibly abundant—in fact, it’s too abundant. Juniper trees have been encroaching into new areas at an alarming rate, overwhelming existing ecosystems and putting both plant and animal lives at risk. Three, juniper is prevalent in some of Oregon’s most economically depressed regions, and the recently-founded Western Juniper Alliance is putting people back to work harvesting juniper, which is boosting the local economies.
Four, it’s a strong wood. Five, it looks fantastic. Six, it smells like heaven. Seven, you can make gin out of it (which, to be clear, is not what we’re doing.) And Gin is a perfect beverage to match with a record-listening session. That's the reason why we will throw a Record Spinning and Gin tasting next Thursday at New Deal Distillery! (Details here.) By using restoration juniper, we are reaffirming our commitment to being more than just green and supporting our local economy and community. You can read more about our goals and what goes into our business decisions in our manifesto. Juniper also happens to be the perfect wood for Vinny, offering both longevity and a pleasing appearance to ensure your vinyl albums look great for a long time to come (and smell good, too!)
