Saturday: anything is possible.
Give us a brief description of you and your work.
I am living out dreams in Portland, Oregon as a working artist, wifey, and stay at home mama to a super fun 5 year old! I love color, sweets, summer, gardening, drawing, and adventuring! I have been running my business handmadejulz for the past 10 years, and it continues to evolve each year. Since becoming a mother, I have realized that my true passion as an artist is found in illustration and teaching. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to stay at home and raise our daughter and figure out what the day will bring when we wake up in the morning.
What's your goal as an artist?
My goal as an artist is to continue to do what I love and to share my views with the world through my art. Creating makes me happy and I hope to make others happy in some way with my art. I would also like to teach kids art classes one day.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
Everywhere. There is so much inspiration in one day it’s often hard to wrap my head around it! I am constantly thinking in pictures. Currently, I’m drawing a lot of inspiration from our garden. I started a 100 days project on April 6th of painting our garden because I wanted to paint more and document what we are growing. I’m also inspired by my husband and his different way of thinking than my own, vintage books, travel, color, and people that I follow or find on Instragram. Being around kids is also a huge source of inspiration for me - they see the world in a way that is just pure magic! Kindness from family & friends that give me support are also inspiring and keep me going!
What do you do when you're not making illustrations?
When I’m not making illustrations, I’m playing, crafting, adventuring, or hanging with my family & friends. During the summer, I love gardening and going to farms to pick berries. When this post goes live, I will be on a 2 week trip to Peru which I’m super excited about!
Vintage or High Tech?
I would have to say vintage. Things seem to be so much simpler and longer lasting with vintage. Our home is filled with vintage pieces from estate sales and vintage toys that my mom saved from my childhood - they invoke happy memories and are beautiful to look at.
What was the last full album you listened to?
The Staple Singers. My favorite neighborhood bar, Vintage, has a coloring night on Monday night. Jacob Balcom DJs with vintage records and Alicia Justus provides a new coloring sheet each week of a Hollywood original. Once you turn in your coloring sheet, (and tip the dj) you can leave with a cd filled with jazz, blues, all 1920’s female singers. It’s always a surprise! I enjoy listening to the cds with my daughter in the car.
Favorite type of melon?
Watermelon. Summer isn’t summer if there isn’t watermelon in the house to eat everyday!
Favorite deceased artist?
Mary Blair has always been an inspiration. Her work is filled with color & so magical! I’ve also always been drawn to the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat. I love all of the details in his paintings and the many layers involved with each of his works. The child-like nature and looseness of his painting is inspiring.
Why do you chose to show your artwork on Plywerk?
I really appreciate all of the details that go into making Plywerk. It’s environmentally friendly, the prints turn out beautiful, and it’s ready to hang!
