Last time you ate a pancake?
So long ago I don't remember but now that you've mentioned it I'll probably eat them for breakfast tomorrow.

Favorite day of the week?

Favorite website besides your own? :)

Give us a brief description of you and your work.

I'm a freelance children's illustrator and I also run a little online shop, The Fox and The Teacup, where I sell prints and illustrated stationery products. I'm a self-taught artist; I actually have a BA in History which I'm obviously not really putting to any use at all. As an artist, I'm a bit of a late bloomer; I didn't start drawing until I was 23 but as soon as I did I was hooked!

With so many art forms available, how did you end up settling on illustration?

I dabbed around with various mediums for about 3 or 4 years before I really settled into illustration. When I discovered digital illustration, it just felt right so I ran with it. I feel like there is so much opportunity for illustrators these days, especially in the children's market, and I love that. I love that I can do what I love, what makes me happy, and I can make it a living at it while making other people happy as well.

Why children's illustrations and design?

Because it allows me to keep being silly and goofy and gives me an awesome excuse to keep being a kid at heart. I'd always dreamed of writing children's book one day -- still do -- so when I started drawing I just naturally gravitated to children's illustration. And within the genre there's so much room to play and experiment and explore, I love that!

You're from West Virginia. Tell us what it was like growing up in WV and how living there continues to impact your artwork.

Well I grew up out in the country, not too far really, about 5 miles from the nearest small town on a piece of land that's been in my family for generations. Playing in the creek behind the house, wandering through the woods and learning about plants and animals were a daily part of my life. And being an only child, I spent a lot of time entertaining myself and imagining the things that might live in those woods, sometimes scary things but mostly cheerful, happy things which I think still reflects in my work.

Now I live in a small college town but we're still surrounded by trees, flowers and wildlife which is a must for me. I just don't feel right if I can't look out my windows and catch a glimpse of tree limbs and birds, things which still tend to influence my work.

What's your goal as an artist?

To inspire. To bring a smile to someone's face. And just generally to put a bit of magic out into a world that often seems so serious.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

Fairytales and random imaginings. Vintage children's illustration.

How do you like your eggs prepared?

I'm vegan so I'll pass on the eggs.

Why do you chose to show your artwork on Plywerk?

Because Plywerk panels are amazingly gorgeous on top of being eco-friendly. I've tried so many panels in the past but Plywerks are my hands down favorite; they make my work look fantastic.

Favorite type of melon?

Watermelon, I just harvested one from my veggie garden and it was super fantastic.

Favorite living artist?

Sticking with the children's illustration theme, right now it's Oliver Jeffers

Favorite deceased artist?

Maurice Sendak

Does thinking of Plywerk give you love butterflies in your stomach?

Of course!

Who's the bigger late 80's hunk: AC Slater from Saved By The Bell or Uncle Jesse from Full House?

Definitely Uncle Jesse.

More about Stephanie

Stephanie is an illustrator, designer and generally curious girl living in lovely but misunderstood West Virigina. She grew up in a rural area with a babbling brook and lush forest just a few feet from her back door. The love of nature she developed as a child still influences me and colors my work today.

After studying ballet and getting her BA in history, she found her true passion in illustrating. She's an entirely self-taught artist who has developed a style of artwork that blends both digital and traditional elements. Stephanie is brilliant at mixing patterns, textures and bright colors to make her artwork truly unique.

Final interesting factoid; we've had 14 Plywerk featured artists so far. Five from the NYC area, three from the Bay area, five from the Pacific NW, and one from WV. Who would have guessed our first vegan artist would be from WV?! So awesome!

I'm new to both Plywerks and Stephanie's art work, but I am already enamored with them both! I especially love the Owl ID chart and the Dragon illustration... We have an owl theme in our upcoming newborn's nursery... We'd love to also add some more dragon themed art too - since our little one will be a year of the dragon. =)
